Welcome to Blogs, Blogging and the Blog Community, the second in a series of articles that explore what blogs are and what blogs aren't, what it means to be a blogger, as well as the blogging communities that comprise the blogosphere itself and how being a part the blogosphere can help define and support the online community you serve.
The initial question many ask, is "What is it, a blog, weblog or website and just what is the difference?" Well, in the series of articles that follow, we hope to answer that question.
Blog
The word blog is simply short for the term web log, or weblog. The word blog can be used both as a noun and as a verb.
When the word blog is used as a noun:
- A blog can be an online journal
- A blog can be a Web diary
- A blog can be a content management system
- A blog can be an online publishing platform
- A blog can be your communication to the Community you serve
When used as a verb, as in 'to blog', the word blog simply means to write in your blog, or post on one's weblog, web log or blog.
What is a Blog
In essence, a weblog, web log or blog is a chronologically organized website with the latest entry or post appearing at the top of the page. The blog is updated by an individual, or a group of individuals, using the following items in each entry or post:
- Main Blog Body - personal commentaries, ideas, and/or stories typically written in the first person ('I').
- Blog Date and Time Stamp - shows the day and/or time the entry is made.
- Blog Post Title - general idea of what the entry is about, although not used by all bloggers.
Blogs or Websites...
Blogs and Websites have some things in common:
- Blogs and Websites are both a means of publishing information and other forms of data to the Web.
- Blogs and Websites both can be set up and kept by any individual inclined to do so.
- Blogs and Websites both have URLs that anyone with an Internet connection can access.
This is where the similarities between blogs and websites end. There are many differences between a blog and a website, the least of which is that blogs tend to be a lot more dynamic a medium of communication than your typical website.
- Blogs are generally updated on a regular basis, sometimes several times each day, with posts or entries that contain a date and time stamp.
- Websites tend to be more static, updated on an occassional basis only, and updated with pages, not by posts.
- There is little need to update a typical website on a regular basis or to include a date and time stamp.
- Even with all the good WYSIWUG editors available, some form of formatting knowledge is required for designing and updating a website.
- Various blog hosts exist that make online publishing easy, which allows for blogs to be updated with a lot less fuss.
- With a blog, simply write an entry and/or post an image, click on a button that says something like 'publish this entry,' and your blog is instantly updated.
- There is no knowledge of HTML needed for using a blog, and FTP access is optional.
- Blogs have build in functionality for things such as archiving, creating permalinks, using Trackback and syndication feeds, while your typical website does not.
Blogs, Blogging and Community
Another major difference between a blog and a website is that blogs are more about community building and support within that community than is your typical website.
While websites can maintain community-based tools such as message boards and guestbook's, blogs by their very nature encourage community building much more directly with built in tools and functionality like comments area, TrackBack, RSS and syndication, tag boards and much more.
